After its discovery in California, gold gained a lot of focus as a common means of monetary exchange. Due to a need for large denomination coins, particularly since the US Treasury was not printing paper money yet, the first $20 gold pieces were introduced in 1849.
The $20 gold coins, otherwise known as Double Eagles, were the largest denomination coins to be produced by the US Mint for regular use. The first Double Eagles from 1849 to 1907 carried an image of Liberty facing left, which was designed by James B. Longacre, and a Heraldic Eagle on the reverse side. In 1866 the words "IN GOD WE TRUST" were added to the back side above the eagle. Also on the reverse side prior to 1877, the value was written as "TWENTY D" which was changed to "TWENTY DOLLARS" on all subsequent Double Eagles.
In 1907 the front image on the Double Eagle was changed to a striding figure of Liberty holding a torch. On the reverse side, the image was that of a flying eagle. The last strikings of the The Double Eagle were in 1933.
